Easy Life – A Message To Myself

Unconventionality seems easy for Easy Life, and the Leicester five-piece make it work effortlessly with each new release. Their first solo single of 2021, A Message To Myself, came alongside the announcement that their debut album, Life’s A Beach, is to be released on 4th June this year.

The three-track taster session gives fans an insight into the first two minutes of the new album, and is accompanied by both their last release of 2020, and also by a familiar fan favourite. Daydreams and Nightmares complement their latest track perfectly and confirm that the band are one of few providing fresh and original modern music.

In an interview with W Magazine, frontman Murray Matraver spoke about how the album is very much a product of recent UK lockdowns, and that he hopes it will be a pick-me-up for whoever needs it right now: “Idleness breeds creativity. Many poets and artists lean on this idea that being bored is almost essential to creation. And since I’ve been so bored, I’ve been writing music constantly”.

Despite being only a very short snippet, A Message To Myself is unorthodox from the first note to the last. The piano intro alone seems unusual, as the seemingly erratic composition hooks you in from each hurried note to the next, before the distinct vocals of Matraver ease us in. Always ones to produce anything but boring, the tempo and beat is soon turned up a notch, resulting in a catchy hook that comes and goes several times throughout the track. The singer shifts between more subdued, isolated vocals and spoken, faster-paced lyrics as each section bounces to the next. Ultimately the uplifiting words provide us with a tune that is undoubtedly a needed serotonin boost in the current climate.

Easy Life evidently have plenty tricks up their sleeve, and with their highly anticipated debut album on the horizon, we are surely in for a treat that is significantly special and so much more.
