Monjola burst onto the alternative RnB music scene in 2020, the year a pandemic swept across the globe. After testing the waters on Soundcloud, the Irish musician released his debut single ‘Know You’, throwing it out into the world and offering listeners a glimmer of hope in what was an otherwise dark year. After receiving a great reaction and rave reviews, the time arrived for the release of his second single, ‘Feels Right’, and 2020 was brought to a close.
No stranger to the music business, Monjola is the founder of Chamomile Records, an Irish independent label that encourages ‘self-expression to create unique sounds, authentic listening experiences and good vibes’. Good vibes can certainly be felt oozing out of his latest single, ‘Smile’. Working with his brother Moyo on production, the new single ‘is as much a statement piece as it is a feel-good anthem’ (earmilk).
Released on the 12th March 2021, ‘Smile’ starts with a catchy beat on drums and accompanying bass as Monjola cleverly contemplates each side of the coin; he’s stuck in his head and thinks that God is testing him but at the same time he knows he should count his blessings. A mention of the sun coming out (something we’re all clinging to as UK winter ends) leads us into a happy feel-good chorus and the theme of the song opens up.
The instruments and vocals used in the background of the chorus create a glistening-type-effect akin to the sun coming out for all of us as Monjola reminds us that ‘life is sweet and love is free, so you really gotta love yourself’. You’ll definitely be smiling after listening to this cracking tune – you can listen to the official audio below…
